Hello and welcome to my first post!

My name is Sevim. I am 21 years old and I am from Germany. I was born in Germany, but I have Kurdish ancestry. I am in the US as an Au Pair since November 2018 and I am so excited to experience a lot of new things!

Question 1: What does your name mean?

My name comes from Turkish and means popularity, beauty and joy. The Turkish word "sevimli" means "sweet", "loveable" or "sympathetic" and is an extension of the word Sevim.

Question 2: What is something that has surprised you about living in the US?

Something that has surprised me about living in the US is how different everything is from Germany, like the American people are very open minded, relaxed and so crazy. Also the street rules are very different and also the shops here are very big as well as everything else for example Target!

Question 3: What is one question you have about the Amish or about American culture?

A question I would have about the Amish people is how they are living without the electricity, because nowadays everybody use electricity and everything works with electricity and I feel like living without it could be so difficult and challenging. That interest me the most!

Question 4: What are three words that describe how you feel about (or what you know about) Amish culture?

1. intrigued 2. respectful 3. admire

  1. Welcome, Sevim! Your name's meaning is so lovely, and it is fascinating to read about your impressions of the US so far. You're right - so many stores here are very big! It is handy to have everything in one place, but it can also be overwhelming. I do enjoy finding the small shops that are local and try to go there when I can because they're more interesting. :)

Thanks for your question about the Amish and their lifestyle related to electricity. I will make sure to include that next weekend.
